Tomato Seeds
Tomato or "tomahto"? However you say it, it is everyone's favourite red fruit. Its name comes to us via Spain from the Aztec word "tomatl". Older gardeners will remember the sweet, juicy, full-flavoured tomatoes we used to eat, and will have noticed that they are nothing like the tomatoes in the shops today.

This is down to the huge demand for tomatoes, which often means fruit imported from abroad or picked early and ripened in cold storage, at the expense of flavour and shelf life. If you want to taste the old flavour again, all you need is a little space to grow your own, small or large, in the garden or on the balcony, in the ground or in a pot, and you will be surprised how easily you get that taste back!

The tomato is the fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, a member of the Solanaceae family. It was first grown in Greece after the mid-19th century, and thanks to our climate and soil Greece produces some of the tastiest tomatoes around. Tomatoes are eaten in many ways, raw or cooked, in countless dishes, sauces, salads, sweets and drinks. Many tomato varieties are widely grown in temperate climates around the world, including in greenhouses, which allow tomatoes to be produced all year round. Tomato plants usually grow 1-3 metres tall, and fruit size ranges from 1 to 10 cm depending on the variety.

Is the Tomato a Fruit or a Vegetable?
In short, the tomato is technically a fruit, but people cook it, eat it and call it a vegetable. Botanically the tomato is a fruit, yet a court case in the USA ruled that it should be treated as a vegetable! Whether something is a fruit or a vegetable depends on whether we are talking in culinary or botanical terms. Botanical classification is based on the structure and function of the plant, while culinary classification is based on flavour and how it is used in recipes. Botanically speaking, then, tomatoes are fruits: all fruits contain one or more seeds and develop from the flower of a plant.

Tomatoes form from small yellow flowers on the vine and naturally contain lots of seeds, which can later be collected and used to grow more tomatoes. In the kitchen, tomatoes are usually used on their own or together with true vegetables in savoury dishes. As a result they have earned a reputation as a vegetable, even though by scientific standards they are technically a fruit. In 1893 the US Supreme Court ruled that the tomato would be classed as a vegetable, based on how it is used in cooking rather than its botanical classification as a fruit.

In Greek both "ntomata" and "tomata" are used. "Ntomata" is probably closer to the original Aztec name "tomatl" and is what most Greeks say, while "tomata" usually appears only in writing.

How Do I Grow Tomatoes?
Growing tomatoes from seed is not difficult and can easily be done by beginners! The right time to sow is spring, and the fruit is harvested in summer and autumn. Whether you grow them in the garden or in a pot on the balcony, choose a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds. Follow the watering instructions for the variety you choose to give your tomato plants the best care. For more flowers and sweet, full-flavoured fruit, feed the soil with an organic fertiliser rich in nitrogen and potassium throughout the growing season.
Can I Grow Tomatoes in a Pot?
Tomatoes are easy to grow in pots, which is a great way to enjoy your favourite crops where space is limited. Simply choose a large pot and fill it with well-draining soil. Place the pot in a sunny spot and water as needed. Start using a water-soluble fertiliser every other week in summer and continue throughout the growing season. Growing tomatoes in pots is easy and can be just as productive as growing them in the garden.
