Variety: Campbell 33 / Solanum lycopersicum
Campbell 33 – a salad tomato variety with bright red, round fruits. The plant produces a large crop of tomatoes.
Fairly resistant to bad weather and disease – very good for high yields.
Campbell 33 tomatoes are ideal for soups, sandwiches and salads.
The famous artist Andy Warhol, after a friend's suggestion –
«Paint something that everybody sees every day, something everybody recognises. Like a can of soup.»
– bought all 32 varieties of Campbell's soup from his local grocer. He projected images of each can onto a screen, traced the outlines and painted every kind of Campbell's soup on white canvas – a forerunner of his even more famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe in similar colours!
An amateur pack of tomato seeds. Campbell 33 is an open-pollinated, compact (determinate) variety – ideal for tomato soup, juice and sauce, with fruits of around 180 g.
Tomatoes grow well alongside garlic, French marigolds, onions, parsley, chives, nasturtiums, carrots, nettles, basil, mint and lemon balm. Garlic between tomatoes helps keep spider mites away, marigolds help deter insects and soil nematodes, while nettles, mint and lemon balm are said to improve fruit quality. Basil helps repel flies, mosquitoes and fruit grubs and is a good companion for tomatoes. Tomatoes can be grown in the same place year after year.
Do not grow alongside potatoes, fennel, corn, cucumber, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip or dill. Do not plant under walnut trees, to avoid walnut wilt.
Tomato seedlings need 12-14 hours of light a day so they don't become leggy. Once they have four true leaves, pot them on into larger pots to encourage root growth.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Campbell 33 tomato germination instructions are included.
