Tomato: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Growing tomatoes from seed gives you stronger plants and far more varieties than ready-grown seedlings. Here are the basic germination and growing instructions.

When to sow tomatoes

Sow in seed trays or small pots from January to March, so the plants can go outside after the last cold spell (April–May).

Planting depth

Sow 2–3 seeds per cell, 0.5 cm deep, in seed compost or soil enriched with compost.

Germination temperature

Ideally 20–25°C. Seeds sprout in 6–12 days. Below 15°C germination is very slow.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy. In the garden, water deeply and regularly at the roots without wetting the leaves.

Light and transplanting

It needs 6–8 hours of sun. Keep the strongest seedling in each cell and transplant at 10–15 cm, 50–60 cm apart, with a stake for support.
