Broccoli: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Broccoli: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Broccoli is a cool-season vegetable and in Greece gives its best harvest in autumn and winter. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

When to sow broccoli

Sow in seed trays from July to September for an autumn-winter harvest, or in February–March for a spring crop.

Planting depth

Plant 1 cm deep in soil rich in organic matter (pH 6.2–7.2).

Germination temperature

Ideally 18–24°C. Germination takes 5–10 days.

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil moist. Dry soil produces small, tough heads.

Light and transplanting

It needs full sun, with some shade during heatwaves. Transplant after 4–6 weeks, 40–50 cm apart. Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser.
