Baobab seeds have a hard seed coat, and preparation differs from species to species. Below you will find separate instructions for the African Adansonia digitata and the Madagascan Adansonia madagascariensis. Early root growth often comes before any visible shoot growth.
Before sowing
Prepare clean containers with drainage holes and a light seed-sowing mix. Moisten the mix before placing the seeds, and label each container with the species and date. If the packet gives newer, batch-specific instructions, check them before you start.
Adansonia digitata
Soak Adansonia digitata seeds for 24 hours in room-temperature water. Sow in a light, airy seed-sowing mix at a depth of about 1 cm. Keep a steady temperature of 23–27°C and the mix lightly moist, never soggy. According to TROPICA, germination may begin within 3–7 weeks. Ventilate daily if you use a cover. Once the seedlings appear, give them plenty of light and protect them from the cold. Early growth above the soil may look slow, as the roots develop first. Transplant carefully once the plants have strengthened, usually after 2–3 months.
Adansonia madagascariensis
Soak Adansonia madagascariensis seeds overnight in water. Then very carefully file a small spot on the hard seed coat until the paler inner layer shows, without damaging the embryo. Sow in a light seed-sowing mix and keep it gently moist, without overwatering. TROPICA reports uneven germination: some seeds sprout within a few days, while others take 1–2 months. Follow the packet for any specific temperature or depth, as these are not given on the supplier's page. After germination, provide plenty of light and warmth. At first, growth is mostly in the roots. Transplant carefully once the plants have strengthened.
Moisture, ventilation and checks
Check the containers regularly. The mix should stay moist without water pooling. If you use a clear cover, ventilate it daily. Do not dig to look for roots, as you may damage the young shoot. The times given are approximate and do not guarantee that all seeds will sprout at the same time.
After germination
Remove the cover gradually, provide enough light and follow the species-specific instructions. Transplant once the plant has strengthened, keeping the root system as intact as possible. Germination is only the start of growing; a mature tree, a bonsai or flowering takes more time and proper care.
