Broccoli has been a kitchen favourite for generations – it doesn't need any hype to earn its place in your vegetable garden.
It is one of the most nutritious vegetables you can grow at home.
Broccoli belongs to the genus Brassica. It is dark green and descends from wild cabbage, which developed over the centuries into the broccoli we know today. Broccoli grows quickly and reaches up to 75 cm. Each packet contains 1 g of seed; one gram contains 350-400 seeds. Depending on the type, broccoli can be green (the most common), purple or, more rarely, orange. It is grown from seed and, depending on the variety, can be harvested 70 to 160 days after sowing.
Broccoli is usually eaten boiled or cooked in all kinds of dishes, and less often raw in salads. It is one of the most nutrient-rich vegetables, containing lutein and sulforaphane, vitamins E, B6, B9 (folate), B3 and C, as well as phosphorus, potassium, iron and many other nutrients.
Broccoli even contains some protein, making it a great choice for vegetarians. Its florets are often compared to little trees, and although it is sometimes misjudged because of its cooking smell, it adds wonderful colour to your dishes and is loved by adults and children alike. A particularly interesting type is Romanesco, whose shape is reminiscent of fractals – patterns in nature that repeat themselves endlessly.
Broccoli is low in calories – only around 25 calories per 100 g – yet it contains plenty of nutrients and even some protein.
How to cook it:
Broccoli is best eaten in season, which means mainly in autumn and winter. The firmer and deeper green it is, the fresher it is. Eat it as soon as possible (within 5 days) for the best flavour.
Wash it well before cooking, as it can be hard to spot and remove small insects and caterpillars hidden among the florets. Broccoli is usually eaten boiled: cut it, rinse it well, put it in a pan and boil for up to 10 minutes. Then drain and, if you like, rinse with cold water to keep its bright green colour.
Sowing / planting / growing
Sow in spring to summer; harvest in November–December or January–February depending on sowing time. This broccoli variety matures in 160 days. Broccoli seeds need warmth to germinate – around 24-26 °C. Space plants 50-70 cm apart in rows 50-70 cm apart. This is an open-pollinated variety, so you can save seeds from your plants and sow them the following year. It needs full sun, or light shade in heatwaves. Use soil rich in nutrients (pH around 6.2-7.2). Water regularly and feed often.
