Sweet Pea: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a climbing flower with a strong fragrance. Here are step-by-step germination and growing instructions from seed.

Preparing the seeds

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours, or lightly nick the seed coat with a nail file. This helps them sprout faster and more evenly.

Sowing and planting depth

Sow in October–November or in early spring, in rich, well-draining soil. Plant 1.5–2 cm deep, 15–20 cm apart.

Temperature

It germinates best at 13–18°C, in 10–20 days. It does not like excessive heat.

Watering and light

Water when the soil surface dries out, without leaving standing water. It needs sun and a support (trellis or string) to climb.

Note: the seeds are not edible.
