Strawberry: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Growing strawberries from seed takes patience, but the plants fruit for years. Follow these germination and growing instructions.

Preparing the seeds

Place the seeds on damp kitchen paper in a bag in the fridge (not the freezer) for 2–4 weeks. Leave them at room temperature for a few hours before sowing.

Sowing and planting depth

Sow from January to March in a light seed compost. The seeds need light: press them onto the surface without covering them.

Germination temperature

Ideally 18–22°C. Germination is irregular, taking 1 to 6 weeks.

Watering

Mist to keep the surface moist and cover with clear film until the seeds sprout.

Light and transplanting

It needs 6–8 hours of sun. Transplant once it has 3–4 true leaves, 25–30 cm apart.
