Coleus: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Coleus is grown for its striking, multicoloured leaves. Here are the germination and growing instructions from seed.

When to sow coleus

Sow from February to May, in small pots indoors.

Sowing and planting depth

Moisten the soil with lukewarm water and scatter the seeds on the surface. Press them in gently without burying them, as they need light to germinate.

Germination temperature

Ideally 21–24°C. Germination takes 10–14 days.

Watering

Cover the pot with clear plastic with a few holes for ventilation. Keep the soil moist, not soggy.

Light and care

Until it sprouts, keep it in a bright spot out of direct sun. Later it prefers partial shade. Pinch off the flowers for bushier, brighter foliage.
