Chia: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is grown for its nutritious seeds and germinates very easily. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

When to sow chia

Sow from April to June, once the cold has passed.

Planting depth

Moisten the soil first. Scatter the seeds over the whole surface and press them in gently, or cover with 1–2 mm of soil.

Germination temperature

Ideally 18–25°C. Germination takes 3–14 days.

Watering

Keep the soil and seeds moist until germination; a clear cover helps. Mature plants tolerate drought.

Light

After germination it needs as much sun as possible, with some shade during heatwaves. It flowers in autumn.
