Basil: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Basil is one of the best-loved herbs in Greek gardens and grows quickly from seed. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

When to sow basil

Sow from March to June, once the cold has passed. Indoors you can start in February.

Planting depth

Cover the seeds with 0.5 cm of fine soil. Use a light, rich mix that drains well.

Germination temperature

Ideally 20–25°C. Germination takes 5–10 days. Temperatures below 10°C damage the plant.

Watering

Keep the soil moist, not soggy. Water in the morning at the base of the plant, not on the leaves.

Light and care

It needs at least 6 hours of sun. Transplant when it has 2 pairs of true leaves, 20–30 cm apart. Pinch off the flowers to encourage new leaves.
