Palm Tree: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Palm trees (Washingtonia, Phoenix canariensis) grow from seed if you give them warmth and patience. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

Preparing the seeds

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours.

Sowing and planting depth

Lay the seeds on light, fluffy soil rich in organic matter and cover them with soil as deep as the seed is thick (about 1 cm). Use tall containers, 18–20 cm deep, as the root develops first.

Germination temperature

At least 25°C, ideally 29–35°C. Germination takes 2–9 weeks.

Watering

Water lightly and cover the pot with film to hold in moisture. As soon as the soil starts to dry, mist the surface thoroughly.

Light

After germination give it a bright spot and gradually more sun.
