Virginia Creeper: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a climber whose leaves turn bright red in autumn. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

Preparing the seeds

Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. Place them on slightly damp kitchen paper in a zip bag in the fridge (not the freezer) for 2 months. Check every 15 days; if they sprout earlier, plant them.

Sowing and planting depth

Plant 1–2 cm deep in loose, free-draining soil (pH 6–7).

Germination temperature

Around 20°C.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist and water when it starts to dry.

Light

Partial shade or a bright spot. For the most vivid red autumn colour, choose sun. The berries are not edible.
