Corn: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Corn: Growing from Seed – Sowing & Germination Guide

Corn needs warmth, sun and the right layout in the garden for good pollination. Here are the germination and growing instructions.

When to sow corn

Sow 10–15 days after the last frost, from April to June, directly in the final spot.

Planting depth

Plant 3–5 cm deep, 25–30 cm apart in the row and 50–60 cm between rows. Plant in a block of several short rows so the wind can pollinate the plants.

Germination temperature

Ideally 20–30°C. Germination takes 5–10 days. In cold soil below 12°C the seeds rot.

Watering

Water deeply and regularly, especially when the tassels and silks appear.

Light and feeding

It needs full sun and a nitrogen-rich fertiliser every 2–3 weeks.
