What is wisteria (Wisteria sinensis)?
Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) belongs to the Fabaceae family and is one of the most beautiful climbing plants, standing out for its wonderful colour and scent! It comes from China and, being very easy to grow, is popular all over the world.
Chinese wisteria flowers from spring into early summer, with very rich, large, hanging clusters of pale violet flowers that give off a wonderful sweet scent that makes it stand out.
Wisteria sinensis can reach from 1 to 9 metres tall, and it spreads even wider: from 3 metres up to 12 metres with the right care.
This plant is also special because, once its green leaves fall in autumn, they reveal its beautiful, enchanting twisting trunk.
Caring for Wisteria sinensis
Wisteria is a very hardy plant that can cope with almost any climate, from winter cold to summer drought. It loves light, which helps it climb faster, so it's best placed in sunny or partly shaded spots.
It is an undemanding plant that needs little watering once established outdoors.
An essential condition is to plant it where it has good drainage, to avoid rot from excess moisture.
Where to grow wisteria (Wisteria sinensis)?
The beautiful wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is an ideal decorative choice. Outdoors it can be grown in large pots, on pergolas, over fences and on other sturdy structures that let it grow quickly and beautify your garden or balcony. It is also popular with bonsai enthusiasts, so it can impress and decorate indoor spaces too!
