Variety: Gigante de Invierno / Spinacia oleracea
Spinach belongs to the order Caryophyllales and the amaranth family (formerly Chenopodiaceae).
It is grown mainly in Europe and North America and originates from Asia.
An annual or biennial plant, it is grown for its thick, triangular leaves. These grow close to the root, are deep green and smooth or crinkled. When the days get longer and temperatures rise, it sends up a flower stem with small flowers.
The fruit is a tiny, single-seeded nutlet, sometimes with a spiny coat. Spinach is grown from seed. It thrives in cool weather: in Greece it is sown from mid-August to February. The soil should be moist, especially while the spinach is young, and sandy loam soils are best.
If there is no rain, water lightly. Many crops are grown without irrigation. Harvest about 6 weeks after sowing.
There are many spinach varieties. The best known in Greece are common spinach, Princess Juliana, short spinach and Argos broadleaf.
Spinach is rich in iron and vitamins A, C, E and K, and also contains chlorophyll and minerals.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Germination and growing instructions for Broadleaf Spinach are included.
