Variety: Red Cherry / Solanum lycopersicum
The cherry tomato is a small, climbing (indeterminate) tomato variety that has been grown since the early 1800s and originates from Peru and Chile.
Ideal for large pots. Produces a large number of tomatoes.
Cherry tomatoes are sweet, juicy and perfect for salads, snacking and sauces.
Cherry tomatoes contain vitamins A, C and K, potassium and manganese, as well as vitamin E, thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, copper and beta-carotene.
Cherry tomatoes owe their bright red colour to lycopene.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Cherry tomato germination and growing instructions are included.
Tomatoes grow well alongside garlic, French marigolds, onions, parsley, chives, nasturtiums, carrots, nettles, basil, mint and lemon balm. Garlic between tomatoes helps keep spider mites away, marigolds help deter insects and soil nematodes, while nettles, mint and lemon balm are said to improve fruit quality. Basil helps repel flies, mosquitoes and fruit grubs and is a good companion for tomatoes. Tomatoes can be grown in the same place year after year.
Do not grow alongside potatoes, fennel, corn, cucumber, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip or dill. Do not plant under walnut trees, to avoid walnut wilt.
This is an open-pollinated variety. You can save seeds from your plants and sow them next season.
A wide range of tomatoes. Buy and grow tomatoes from seed. The tomato fruit – botanically a fruit – is usually round but comes in many sizes and shapes. Tomatoes are usually red but also come in other colours such as yellow and black. Tomatoes contain a pigment called lycopene, which is why they start green and then turn red. Fruits weighing more than 450 g are classed as beefsteak tomatoes. The Latin name of the tomato is Solanum lycopersicum, and it belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The tomato comes from Central and South America and is usually grown as an annual.
There are two types of tomato: indeterminate (climbing) and determinate (bush). Indeterminate and semi-determinate tomatoes need support with string, canes or wire, while determinate tomatoes need no support as they stop growing upwards on their own.
The tomato genome was decoded and published in the journal Nature in May 2012, the work of some 300 scientists from 14 countries. This research will help develop improved varieties – even of aubergines and peppers, which share much of their genetic make-up with the tomato!
Tomatoes usually have round, edible red fruits. Although often classed as a vegetable, the tomato is botanically a fruit. It is eaten on its own, in salads and in sauces, and is grown all year round in greenhouses.
