Mastic Tree (Pistacia lentiscus) – The Treasure of Chios in Your Home!
The mastic tree (botanical name Pistacia lentiscus), also known as lentisk or “schinos”, is an iconic Mediterranean plant, famous for producing mastic, an aromatic resin with many uses. The mastic tree thrives mainly in areas with a Mediterranean climate, such as Greece, Turkey and other Mediterranean countries. However, high-quality mastic production is limited to specific areas, above all the Greek island of Chios.
History and culture
The mastic tree and its resin have a long history and have been linked to many Mediterranean civilisations. Mastic has been known since antiquity and was used in cooking and for cosmetic purposes. Today, mastic production is an important part of the economy of Chios, and Chios mastic has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

The mastic tree in nature.
In nature, Pistacia lentiscus can reach up to 4 metres in height. It is evergreen, with pinnate leaves that give off a subtle yet distinctive scent. Its flowers are small and barely noticeable, and its fruit is a small red “berry”, which is not edible.
Mastic is the resin that seeps from the trunk when it is wounded. It has a unique aromatic flavour and is widely used in cooking, perfumery and cosmetics.
All in all, a mastic tree bonsai is an excellent choice if you are looking for a beautiful, hardy and historically important plant to decorate your space and enjoy the art of bonsai.
