The hollyhock (Alcea) is a perennial that is easy to grow.
Its botanical name comes from the ancient Greek word "altho", meaning "to heal", as related plants have been used since ancient times as traditional herbs.
The philosopher Theophrastus wrote about the plant and its traditional uses.
It is a classic cottage-garden plant with tall flower spikes in many colours.
Its flowers can also be used in cooking and to make herbal infusions.
Hollyhock leaves and flowers have traditionally been added to baths.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Germination/growing instructions for hollyhock are included.
