The Ghost Pepper / Bhut Jolokia is the world's most famous hot pepper, as it was the first to stand out from “milder” chillies such as habanero, jalapeño and cayenne.
In 2007 the Bhut Jolokia entered the Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world, which made it far more widely known.
It belongs to the species Capsicum chinense and originally comes from India. Measurements have shown that climate and growing conditions can affect its heat by up to 50%. The Bhut Jolokia is 6 to 8.5 cm long.
It is used as a food and a spice, both fresh and dried. In India it is even smeared on fences to keep elephants away!
Handle with care: Jolokia chilli powder is extremely hot and doesn't wash off your hands easily.
