Dianthus, commonly known as the carnation, is a beautiful, fragrant perennial ornamental plant in the genus Dianthus and the family Caryophyllaceae. It has been grown since ancient times and is one of the oldest, best-known and most common ornamental plants.
The flower of the carnation plant is also simply called a carnation.
It is a bushy plant that reaches up to 60 cm tall. Its leaves are long, narrow and lance-shaped, and its strong roots go deep into the soil.
Carnation flowers come in many colours, have a lovely scent and 5 sepals that form a tube.
The carnation has been widely grown for more than 2,000 years and is even mentioned by Theophrastus in his "Enquiry into Plants". Today it is grown in the Mediterranean, Asia, North America and temperate or subtropical parts of Africa. Its ancestor is thought to be a wild fragrant species from the western Mediterranean, found on rocky ground in Sicily, Sardinia and Gibraltar.
It is a fairly hardy plant and its cut stems last a long time in a vase. It needs bright, sunny spots; high humidity does not suit it and can cause rot. Temperatures above 35°C can dry the plant out, so in summer – especially in small pots – it needs regular watering.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Planting/growing/sowing instructions for carnations are included.
Sow carnation seeds 0.5 cm deep. Carnations need full sun for 4-5 hours a day. Use nutrient-rich compost. They do not need much water except in summer: keep the soil just moist and do not overwater. They need temperatures of 15°C or more.
