Soils and fertilisers for healthy bonsai
Bonsai live in small, shallow pots with very little soil. That is why they need a special substrate that drains quickly yet holds moisture, plus regular feeding with balanced nutrients.
Bonsai substrates:
- Akadama: the classic Japanese clay, the basis of every bonsai mix.
- Kiryu: ideal for pines, junipers and species that need fast drainage.
- Lava rock and black Fuji sand, for better root aeration.
Fertilisers and care:
- BioGold Original: the well-known Japanese organic pellet fertiliser.
- Matsu, Yorkey and organic trace-element fertiliser, for regular feeding.
- Fertiliser baskets and Lac Balsam for healing cuts after pruning.
