What is Kiryu bonsai soil?
Kiryu is a special volcanic substrate widely used in bonsai cultivation. It is known for its hard, granular texture and excellent drainage and aeration. A key feature of Kiryu is its high porosity, which lets it hold water and nutrients effectively for a long time, releasing them gradually to the tree’s roots.
Although it is relatively low in nutrients, this makes it ideal for bonsai, as it doesn't encourage excessive foliage growth – something undesirable in bonsai. It is an excellent growing medium for all kinds of bonsai, but is particularly suited to conifers (such as pines and junipers), either as an additive in soil mixes or even on its own for weakened conifers. With Kiryu, you’ll notice a clear boost to your bonsai’s healthy growth, especially its root system.
What are the benefits of Kiryu soil?
Excellent drainage and aeration: Prevents root rot and ensures a good oxygen supply.
High porosity: Holds water and nutrients, reducing the need for frequent watering and feeding.
Slow breakdown: Keeps its structure for many years, making it durable and economical.
Relatively free of pests and diseases: Reduces the risk of infestation and infection.
Helps maintain a healthy root system: Its structure encourages strong, compact roots.
Kiryu can be used on its own or mixed with other components, such as akadama, to create a customised soil mix.
In short, Kiryu bonsai soil is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-quality growing medium for their bonsai. It offers outstanding drainage, aeration and water retention, and is extremely durable.
