Portulacaria afra – A timeless bonsai!
Portulacaria afra, also known as the elephant bush or spekboom, is a little wonder of nature and one of the most popular plants for bonsai. Native to the arid regions of South Africa, this hardy plant has won over bonsai lovers thanks to how easy it is to shape and its striking look.
Its thick, fleshy leaves, reminiscent of tiny olive leaves, form a dense green bush. As the plant matures, its stems become woody, giving the trunk an elegant patina, while its slow but steady growth makes it ideal for bonsai.
What makes the Portulacaria afra bonsai special?
One of the most striking moments in the life of Portulacaria afra is when it flowers. In spring, tiny white or pink flowers may cover the plant, adding a romantic touch to its already striking look.
It tolerates drought and needs no special care.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced bonsai grower, Portulacaria afra is an excellent choice to start or enrich your collection and create a small, timeless work of art in a corner of your home.
