What is Ficus ginseng?
Ficus ginseng is the most widespread "bonsai" plant in Greece. It is a beautiful indoor plant with a distinctive trunk and roots that sit above the soil and often take on interesting shapes.
Ficus bonsai (ficus ginseng) can be kept indoors or outdoors, out of direct sun and sheltered from strong winds
Ficus ginseng is a striking evergreen, mainly for indoors, with Asian origins.
It is a very beautiful, lush green little tree with oval glossy leaves that stands out for its thick trunk, as the fat roots it develops sit permanently above the soil surface; you could call it the "tree that stands on its own feet"!
Ficus is one of the most popular genera for bonsai, a Japanese term meaning "tree in a container/pot" that refers to the art of growing trees in small pots.
Ficus Ginseng Care
This type of bonsai is very popular because it needs little care, making it the ideal choice for beginners who are new to growing bonsai.
Ficus loves bright light, so it's best placed in a very bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight.
Take care not to expose it to direct sun, which can scorch its beautiful green leaves!
The ideal temperature for a ficus is between 16°C and 25°C, so it needs moderate temperatures and protection from very high and very low temperatures.
How often should I water Ficus ginseng?
In the winter months, reduce watering as temperatures are lower, watering as soon as the soil starts to dry. In summer, however, its growing season, give it more water, keeping the top of the soil slightly moist.
Be careful not to overdo it, as too much water can cause root rot and leaf drop!
How do I prune a Ficus ginseng bonsai?
To keep the tree's beautiful shape, prune it regularly.
If you want your ficus to have a denser shape, regularly remove some leaves to encourage new growth and prune back older branches.
Feeding your ficus
Although ficus is a fast-growing tree, it's important to feed it with a liquid bonsai fertiliser, which you can find in our shop by clicking here. Feed at least once a month, or ideally every 15 days, in spring and autumn.
Health tips
It's important to wipe the ficus leaves with a damp cloth so dust doesn't build up on them.
Ficus ginseng is a fairly hardy plant, so you don't need to worry much about diseases and pests.
However, if you notice yellowing leaves, cut back on watering, as there may be too much moisture in the soil.
These plants come in bonsai form in a small pot at a very attractive price and are recommended for beginners and more experienced growers alike.
