Four o'clock flower seeds (mixed colours)
The four o'clock flower is a classic ornamental, fragrant plant of the Greek countryside. Although native to tropical America, it is grown all over the world and thrives mainly in warm climates.
It flowers from early spring through to autumn, especially in the summer months. In winter it dies back, as it cannot withstand hard frost, but it regrows once the cold has passed – which is why it is described as a semi-perennial.
The four o'clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa, marvel of Peru) is a small, bushy plant with lush foliage, reaching 1 metre in height. Its flowers can be white, yellow, pink or magenta, and you may see two colours on a single flower or several colours on one plant.
The four o'clock flower's key feature is the way its flowers open in the late afternoon and stay open all night, closing again in the early morning. It has a very strong, distinctive fragrance.
The plant was already known and valued by the Aztecs. Please note: its seeds and roots are toxic if eaten – keep away from children and pets.
Its flowers have also been used as a natural dye for colouring food and drinks.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Four o'clock flower germination instructions are included.
