What Is Bonsai?
Bonsai are long-lived miniature trees that originated in China. The technique was later adopted and perfected by the Japanese. The name bonsai comes from the Chinese word penjing (or penzai), which the Japanese adapted into “bonsai” – meaning “tree in a pot” or “tree in a shallow container”.
Bonsai can be created from almost any tree species, although the species you choose affects how easy it is to care for. The aim of bonsai is to recreate elegant, serene natural landscapes in miniature – an enjoyable, relaxing process that uplifts body and mind. Bonsai were brought indoors by the Japanese aristocracy and remain symbols of prestige and refinement to this day.
Buying Bonsai – How Bonsai Are Used
Bonsai are mainly grown as ornamental trees for indoors and outdoors. With their exotic yet minimalist style, these striking miniature trees beautify any space and lift the mood, while caring for them is a truly enjoyable process that offers moments of real relaxation.
Unlike other plants, bonsai are not grown for food or medicine; the emphasis is on the concentration, meditation and personal growth of the person who cares for and shapes them. A bonsai tree makes a perfect gift – for yourself or for the people you love.
A Brief History of Bonsai
Although it is not entirely clear when and how the art of growing dwarf trees began, it is widely believed to have started during the Han dynasty in China, sometime between 203 BC and 220 AD, later spreading across Asia with Buddhist monks.
Many historical sources tell us that the Chinese had a passion for gardening, and in particular for creating miniature gardens. They developed many intricate miniaturisation techniques, as these tiny gardens were admired not only for their beauty but also for their supposed magical and mystical qualities.
Folk tradition even tells of a legend that the first bonsai trees were created at the command of a powerful emperor who wished to recreate his entire empire – from mighty waterfalls to dense forests – in his own garden, so he could admire it from his palace window without having to travel.

Bonsai Prices
The price of a bonsai depends on several factors, from the special techniques used to grow and train it to – most importantly – its age. Bonsai prices can range from as little as 20 euros to a staggering one million. In essence, the difference in price comes down mainly to the age of the tree.
In our shop we offer a wide range of bonsai at very low prices, starting from just 15 euros, because we want to share this special, ancient art with as many people as possible. That way, everyone has the chance to start growing their own miniature forest.
Bonsai Care
Generally speaking, bonsai are forgiving plants, which means they can adapt to a wide range of climates, from winter frosts to the hot, humid summers of Mediterranean countries. Ideally, though, bonsai prefer milder climates, where they thrive best.
The first thing to decide is where to place your bonsai. Although bonsai love sunlight, direct sun can scorch them. Outdoors, it is best to place them in light shade, such as near another tree. Indoors, keep them fairly close to a window.
Watering
Watering is the most important factor in healthy bonsai growth – but there is no need to worry, as there is no hard-and-fast rule about how often to water. To keep your bonsai in top condition, simply water until the compost is thoroughly moist and water runs out of the drainage holes, without overflowing. Repeat whenever the compost has absorbed almost all the water, which you can easily check by touching the surface.
Does a Bonsai Need Fertiliser?
Yes, it does. Feed your bonsai from early spring to late autumn. The ideal bonsai fertiliser is rich in phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. We stock a specialist bonsai fertiliser, which you can see by clicking here. Feed once a month.
Compost
Your bonsai will also need special bonsai compost, whether you want to top up, repot or start from seed. We stock specialist bonsai compost, which you can buy here.
Pruning
Like all trees, bonsai need pruning, for two reasons. First, to maintain their stunning shape and develop beautiful branches under your guidance. Second, to let in air and light, giving young shoots the chance to grow and show off their own charm.
