Yellow tamarillo (tree tomato – Cyphomandra betacea) is a striking, exotic ornamental plant that combines a unique look with a crop of edible fruit, bringing a special character to any garden or balcony. With its tropical appearance and large, heart-shaped leaves, it instantly creates a lush, lively effect – ideal for anyone who wants something different from the usual plants.
It is a fast-growing, evergreen sub-shrub that can reach 1 to 2 metres in height, forming dense, vigorous growth. Its leaves are large and impressive, up to 35 cm long, and release a distinctive, slightly exotic scent when touched. In spring, tamarillo bears pretty pink or lilac flowers in clusters at the tips of the branches, adding even more ornamental value.
It then produces striking yellow fruits, which are not only edible but also act as a natural decoration on the plant, adding to its exotic look. The fruits are egg-shaped with smooth, glossy skin, and their flesh is juicy, aromatic and pleasantly sweet-and-sour. Although they can be eaten, tamarillo is valued above all for its ornamental appeal, combining foliage, flowers and fruit in one plant.
It is fairly easy to grow, making it suitable even for beginners. It needs particular care in winter, as tamarillo is not frost hardy. A mature plant can tolerate low temperatures for a short time, but the general advice is to avoid exposing it to frost.
Tamarillo is an ideal choice for balconies, terraces and exotic-style gardens, offering height, volume and an impressive presence. It is a plant that never goes unnoticed and can act as a centrepiece in any space.
If you are looking for an ornamental plant that combines an exotic look, easy cultivation and unique appeal, yellow tamarillo will upgrade your space and catch the eye from the very first moment.
