Cumin is the common name of the plant Cuminum cyminum, also known as white cumin or jeera (zeera). It is a flowering plant in the celery family (Apiaceae), native from the eastern Mediterranean to India, and is now also grown in China and Mexico.
Its seeds (each contained in a small fruit that is dried) are used to flavour the cuisines of many different cultures, and are sold both whole and ground.
Cumin is the dried seed of Cuminum cyminum, a member of the parsley family. The plant grows 30-50 cm (12-20 inches) tall and is harvested by hand. It is an annual herbaceous plant with a slender, smooth, branching stem.
Cumin seeds are used as a spice for their distinctive flavour and aroma. Cumin is popular worldwide and is a staple in many cuisines, especially those of South Asia, North Africa and Latin America. It is found in some cheeses, such as Leyden cheese, and in some traditional French breads, and is widely used in traditional Brazilian cooking.
Cumin can be an ingredient in chilli powder (often Tex-Mex or Mexican style) and is found in achiote blends, adobos, sofrito, garam masala, curry powder, baharat and ras el hanout. In Myanmar, cumin is known as “zi ya” and is used as a spice.
Cumin can be used ground or as whole seeds. It adds an earthy, warming note to food, making it a staple in some stews and soups as well as spicy sauces such as chilli. It is also used in some pickles and pastries.
In Cyprus it is used the way we use pepper.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
