Air plants: the unusual plants that grow without soil!
If you want to add something original to your indoor or outdoor décor, a striking air plant is the perfect choice – it is sure to catch the eye of everyone in the room!
What are air plants?
These plants are called air plants because they take most of the nutrients they need from the air. They also differ from almost all other plants in that they need no soil to grow: they are epiphytes (from the Greek for “upon a plant”) and in nature can be found growing on trees and even on rocks!
All air plants belong to the genus Tillandsia, which includes many flowering perennials in the Bromeliaceae family. They are found in mountains, forests and even deserts across Mexico, Argentina, the southern USA, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Air Plant Tillandsia Multiflora
A truly striking air plant that will brighten up any spot in your home.
This Tillandsia stands out for its rosette of leaves in various shades of green.
Tillandsia multiflora loves bright light, which brings out its sheen and natural beauty.
How do I care for a Tillandsia multiflora air plant?
Most air plants love bright spots but not direct sun, so avoid placing them right next to windows or glass where the sun falls directly on them, especially in summer.
Like all air plants, Tillandsia multiflora has no true root system, so keep it away from strong draughts, which can dry out its fine surface roots.
How do I water a Tillandsia multiflora air plant?
How often an air plant needs watering depends on the variety.
A clear sign that your air plant needs water is when the tips of its leaves start to curl.
Most air plants (especially the larger ones) need a bath roughly every 20 days! Soak them in a bowl of water for a short while, then turn them upside down so they drain thoroughly.
Important! Draining them properly is the most important thing to watch, so that water does not collect at the base and cause rot.
The Multiflora air plant is covered in tiny hairs (trichomes) that absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. Because of its size it needs plenty of humidity, so between baths mist it 2-3 times a week, especially in summer!
Does the Multiflora air plant need fertiliser?
We recommend spraying all air plants with a liquid fertiliser once a month, to keep them looking vibrant and healthy.
Air plants impress with their beautiful flowers when in bloom – and some species don't flower at all but change colour instead, so the whole plant looks like a gorgeous flower!
