Pleiospilos nelii, known as split rock or living granite, is a flowering succulent in the Aizoaceae family, native to South Africa. It grows in semi-arid areas of the Karoo in South Africa. The common name "split rock" refers to the appearance of the plant's leaves. Pleiospilos nelii has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Pleiospilos nelii is a succulent perennial that can reach 5–8 cm (2–3 in) tall and about 10 cm (4 in) across. This very short-stemmed, almost stemless plant has one or more pairs of opposite, almost hemispherical, grey-green or brownish leaves.
The leaf surface is covered in many small dark dots. A new pair of leaves is produced each year, replacing an older pair. The plant looks very much like a small split rock (hence its common name), an appearance that may have evolved as a defence against plant-eating animals.
Its daisy-like flowers are yellow-orange, 6–7.5 cm (2–3 in) across, and emerge from the growing point at the top of the plant. The flowers are large for the size of the plant. Each flower opens in the afternoon and closes at sunset, over a flowering period of several days.
P. nelii is one of many plants grown for their rock-like appearance, sometimes known collectively as mesembs. In temperate regions it is grown under glass for protection from too much rain and hard frosts.
