Sarracenia is a genus of carnivorous plants in the Sarraceniaceae family. The genus includes around 11 species native to North America.
Sarracenia grows naturally in bogs and wetlands. Its leaves form tall, tubular pitchers with a colourful, nectar-coated lip that attracts insects. Once an insect slips inside, it cannot climb out, and the plant digests it and absorbs its nutrients.
Sarracenia is an important plant for its ecosystem. It helps control insect populations and supports other wildlife.
Sarracenia plants are famous for their pitchers, which are adapted to trap insects. The pitchers are made from thick, glossy leaves and have an opening that holds liquid. Insects are drawn in by the scent of the nectar and fall into the pitcher. Once inside, they cannot escape: the slippery walls and the liquid at the bottom trap them.
Germination / growing instructions for Sarracenia are included with every purchase.
