Pisum sativum
The pea (Pisum sativum) is a legume and a much-loved, inexpensive and nutritious dish in Greece.
Peas are a good source of protein and carbohydrates and contain almost no fat.
Fresh peas from the garden are sweet and tender – perfect in the classic Greek pea stew (arakas latheros) with dill, carrots and potatoes.
Peas are also delicious in risottos, pasta, soups and salads.
Peas are easy to grow, as they need little water and grow in many types of soil. They are also ideal for your garden because they thrive in cool weather, so they can be grown in winter when beds would otherwise stand empty. During this time, peas enrich the soil with nitrogen and prepare it for spring crops. Peas need plenty of light and air to thrive, so choose open, well-ventilated, bright spots.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Pea germination and growing instructions are included.
