Mammillaria gracilis 'Oruga' is a variety of very small cacti that spread and clump in their pots. They come from central Mexico. This species is very short, with many dense spines. It thrives in very dry environments and warm climates. It can also be kept indoors, as long as it is near a window with good airflow and sunlight.
As with all cacti, watering is very easy: only water when the soil is very dry, as they are naturally drought-tolerant. It flowers in spring with tiny white flowers that look like little snowflakes, although the colour can vary to shades of yellow and soft pink.
As well as tolerating high temperatures, it is very easy to propagate, as offsets can easily be separated and grown on individually. It also only needs repotting every 2-3 years and is rarely affected by disease.
