Step into a world full of colour and surprises with Heliconia caribaea, known as the “lobster claw”. This striking plant will bring a tropical touch to any garden or space, offering a unique sense of exotic beauty.
Heliconia caribaea, also known as wild plantain or lobster claw, is a beautiful evergreen perennial native to tropical America, from the Caribbean to northern South America. It's known for its striking red or yellow flower bracts that look like lobster claws.
Heliconia caribaea has large, elongated, leathery, dark green leaves that grow directly from a rhizome. The leaves sit on long stalks and can reach 2 metres in length. Its most captivating feature is the flowers, held in clusters on the stems. These aren't actually petals but colourful bracts in shades of deep red or bright yellow, and they can be 15–20 cm long.
The long-lasting flowers are also excellent in cut-flower arrangements, adding a unique, exotic touch indoors.
If you live in a warm climate and are looking for a striking plant for your garden, Heliconia caribaea is an excellent choice. In cooler areas it can be grown in a large pot and brought indoors in winter.
Germination/growing instructions for the lobster claw (Heliconia caribaea) are included with every order.
