What are Lithops (living stones)?
Lithops are among the most fascinating succulents. They are not cacti, but like cacti they are succulent plants.
They are easy to grow as long as they get plenty of sun and the right light, free-draining soil. Lithops are succulents and need very little care and watering.
Unlike cacti, lithops have no spines, and they look very different from typical cacti, as they resemble small pebbles – hence their common name, living stones.
The name Lithops comes from the Greek word lithos, meaning stone. They are very popular plants, and many collectors keep large collections of every species. Because lithops are so good at camouflage, new species are still being discovered in Africa, mainly in Namibia and Botswana. They are native to southern Africa but are now grown all over the world.
What do Lithops look like?
Lithops usually have a greenish base and a coloured, speckled top. The colours on top range from brown and purple to yellow and blue!
How do Lithops reproduce?
The way they renew themselves is truly amazing: a new pair of leaves emerges from inside the old one, while the old “leaves” start to shrivel and split open. Over time the old pair disappears and is replaced by the new growth – sometimes by two new heads. They can be propagated by division or from seed.
How many Lithops species are there?
More than 30 species of Lithops have been recorded.
How were Lithops discovered?
As you might expect, lithops were discovered when someone bent down to pick up a strange, colourful pebble and found it was a living plant!
