Edelweiss comes from the Alps, where it grows wild, and its botanical name is Leontopodium alpinum. It usually grows on rocky cliffs and mountain slopes in the Alps. Its flowers are very special: small, white, woolly and scentless. Its German name means "noble white"!
Edelweiss is a perennial and can be used for edging. It reaches 25 cm tall. There are about 1,600 seeds per gram. When planting, leave 20 cm between rows.
Edelweiss is a protected plant in many Alpine countries, as wild populations have been threatened by over-picking.
Edelweiss is the unofficial national flower of Switzerland and is also called queen of the ice, eternal flower of the Alps and star of the Alps. Because it grows high in the mountains, it is a symbol of mountain peaks and nature conservation. Legends say edelweiss flowers are the tears of the Snow Queen. Other legends say that the star that guided the three wise men broke into countless smaller stars, which fell to earth and became the "ice stars" later called edelweiss.
Edelweiss is a much-loved flower: although it is not especially colourful or fragrant, it is widely used as a logo for beers, companies and mountaineering clubs, as it is a symbol of mountaineering.
Edelweiss extract, made from its flowers, is also used in cosmetics. When grown at low altitude, edelweiss does not develop its lovely velvety coat of hairs as strongly, since these form mainly at altitude to protect the plant from cold and strong sunlight.
