The popular Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' is a wonderful, original succulent, ideal for decorating both outdoor and indoor spaces.
It is a fairly small, bushy succulent with trumpet-shaped leaves that grows into a beautiful little tree as it matures. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is often confused with Crassula ovata 'Gollum', as the two look and grow very much alike.
This unusual plant comes from South Africa, where it grows mainly on rocky slopes in hot, sunny conditions.
The much-loved Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' has fleshy, thick green leaves, curled like spoons, with narrow red edges, and its flowers look like little white or pink-white stars.
In ideal conditions the 'Hobbit' variety flowers in autumn and winter, and the plant won't exceed 90 cm in height.
Plant height: 15 cm
Pot diameter: 6.5 cm
Caring for Crassula ovata 'Hobbit'
This Crassula is fairly easy to care for and maintain, as it has few demands.
Crassula 'Hobbit' loves light, which helps it grow and keep the bright green colour of its leaves. The more light it gets, the stronger the red edges on its leaves. So it's important to place it in a bright spot in the home, or in a sunny, bright spot in your garden or on your terrace.
Like all succulents, Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' should be watered 1-2 times a week in summer, provided the compost has dried out well before each watering; the rest of the year, water about every 15 days. Beware of overwatering, which can lead to root rot, and make sure it drains well.
Use a special cactus and succulent compost and feed Crassula 'Hobbit' during the active growing season.

It's important to prune your Crassula ovata in spring to help it develop a better shape with a stronger, more compact main stem.
