Borage / Starflower / Borago
Borage is an annual plant found in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, both wild and in cultivation. It is known for its beautiful star-shaped flowers in blue, white or pink. Borage grows 60-100 cm tall, and its green leaves are covered in dense, bristly hairs.
Each packet contains 1.5 g of borage seed (about 65 seeds per gram).
Borage is used mainly in cooking and has long been grown in herb gardens. It is also a superb plant for bees, which visit its flowers constantly.
Borage flowers are edible: they can be eaten fresh, used dried as a herb, or added to salads and drinks as a pretty garnish.
Borage seed oil is widely used in cosmetics.
Borage seeds can be sown all year round, as it is not a demanding plant – unless the climate is very cold, in which case it is best sown in spring. Borage needs light but should be sheltered from wind. It is not fussy about soil and only needs feeding once a month.
For best results, combine borage with one of our fertilisers (use once a month, starting one month after planting).
Borage germination and growing instructions are included.
