Bilberry – The Authentic Taste of the Forest in Your Garden!
Discover the charm of the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), known internationally as the wild blueberry or bosbes. It is the wild form of the much-loved berry – a true treasure of the forest that brings rich flavour and deep colour to your own garden.
Its berries are small and round, deep blue to purple, with an intense, unmistakable aroma.
They are delicious eaten fresh, and perfect for making jams, desserts and refreshing smoothies.
Each little berry is packed with natural anthocyanin pigments, which give bilberries their deep colour throughout.
They are usually harvested in summer.
Features and cultivation
The bilberry is a low-growing plant, reaching around 40-90 cm. This makes it ideal for rock gardens, planters or even planting under trees, where it forms an attractive, ornamental shrub.
It is easy to grow, and the result is well worth the patience.
To thrive, the bilberry needs:
Acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5–5.5), such as ericaceous compost or forest soil.
Partial shade to full sun for best growth and fruiting.
Bring the unique wild taste of the forest into your garden with the bilberry and enjoy its precious fruit!
