Deadly nightshade, also known as belladonna or Atropa belladonna, is one of the most fascinating plants in European botanical history – a plant that combines danger and allure with the darker side of nature. From antiquity to the Middle Ages, belladonna was used by herbalists, physicians and alchemists, sometimes as a remedy and sometimes as a poison.
Its leaves and roots contain alkaloids such as atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine, which act powerfully on the nervous system. Atropine in particular dilates the pupils, which is why Renaissance women used extracts of the plant to get «big, beautiful eyes» – hence the name bella donna («beautiful lady»).
Behind this attractive story, however, lies a dangerous reality: all parts of the plant are toxic, and its fruits – small, shiny black berries – are extremely poisonous. Even a small amount can cause severe symptoms. For this reason, belladonna should be grown only for collection, research or ornamental purposes – never for consumption or any medicinal use.
The plant has a strong visual presence: dark green leaves, bell-shaped purple flowers and fruits that look like black pearls. It is a species that captures both the eye and the imagination – ideal for collectors of rare, historic plants with a mythical past and a powerful botanical identity.
This plant is extremely toxic. It must not be eaten or used in any form. Keep away from children and pets.
