Astrophytum myriostigma is a spineless cactus with a star shape, hence the name Astrophytum (star plant). It has several common names, such as bishop's cap or bishop's hat cactus. It comes from central and north-eastern Mexico.
Cacti are special plants with no leaves and modest water needs. They grow in hot climates, mainly in the Americas. Because of the heat they live in, they have learned to store water inside them to meet their own needs. Instead of leaves, most have spines, which protect them from plant-eating animals, and they photosynthesise through their stems. They come in a huge variety of shapes and forms.
Astrophytum myriostigma has a distinctive form: it usually has 5 to 7 prominent vertical ribs that create its star shape. Over many years it can reach 70 to 100 cm tall and 10 to 20 cm across. It usually flowers in late spring and early summer, producing yellow flowers with a reddish centre at the top of the plant. It needs very little water.
