Cucamelon (Mexican Gherkin) – Melothria scabra
Cucamelon, also known as the Mexican sour gherkin or Melothria scabra, is a special climbing plant that produces tiny fruits that look like watermelons and taste like fresh cucumber with a hint of lemon. It comes from Mexico and Central America and has become especially popular in recent years with lovers of rare and unusual vegetables.
The plant belongs to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) and grows quickly, reaching 2 to 3 metres tall. Its slender stems and small, bright leaves make a pretty, ornamental display, while the fruits are about 2–3 cm long. They look like tiny watermelons, and their flavour is pleasantly crunchy and refreshing.
The little fruits can be eaten fresh, in salads, pickled or used as a garnish for dishes and drinks.
It's an ideal plant for the garden, terrace or balcony, combining productive and ornamental value.
Cucamelon is resistant to diseases and drought, making it easy even for beginner growers.
It crops abundantly all summer long and adds a special, exotic touch to any vegetable garden.
It's ideal for anyone who wants to try something different from ordinary cucumbers and add a striking, rare plant to their collection.
Planting/growing instructions for Cucamelon are included with every order.
