Exotic Beauty with an Intoxicating Fragrance
Cassabanana, known scientifically as Sicana odorifera, is a rare, exotic climbing plant from the tropical regions of South America, mainly Brazil and Colombia.
It has been grown by indigenous peoples for centuries, not only for its striking fruits but also for its wonderful sweet fragrance, reminiscent of melon and banana.
A plant with a history
Cassabanana has long been known in tropical America, and its name is usually linked to its banana-like aroma and the elongated shape of its fruit. The fruits were often kept indoors as a natural air freshener, hence the Latin name odorifera, meaning “fragrant”.
Features
Cassabanana is a perennial climbing plant that can reach 10 metres in length, with large leaves and striking orange-red fruits up to 60 cm long. As well as looking spectacular, the fruits have sweet, aromatic flesh, ideal for eating fresh or for making jams and drinks.
Growing
Cassabanana prefers warm climates and sunny spots. It can be grown in the garden or in a large pot, with a support or pergola. Sow the seeds in spring in a light, well-drained mix. It's a fast-growing plant, and with a little care and patience it can produce spectacular fruit within a single year.
Ideal for collectors and rare-plant lovers
Cassabanana isn't just ornamental – it's a piece of botanical history. A plant that has fascinated explorers, naturalists and growers for centuries, and still stands out today for its fragrance and exotic charm.
