Monterey Cypress: California's Mighty Jewel
Meet the Monterey cypress:
The Monterey cypress, scientifically known as Cupressus macrocarpa, is a striking conifer that graces landscapes around the world. It belongs to the genus Cupressus, which includes around 20 species, and stands out for its imposing look and the wide range of colours its cultivars offer.
The Monterey cypress is native to the windswept coast of Monterey Bay in California. Its Latin name macrocarpa means “large-fruited”, after its characteristic large cones.
A strong presence:
This evergreen tree can reach up to 30 metres tall, with a trunk up to 2.5 metres across. Its sturdy build and frost tolerance down to -10°C make it an ideal choice for parks and gardens.
Dense beauty:
It stands out for its dense green crown, formed by strong branches low on the trunk. Its scale-like leaves give off a strong lemon scent when crushed, adding to the tree's special charm.
Variety and growth:
Beyond the wild species, the Monterey cypress has given rise to many cultivated varieties, offering a wide range of shapes, colours and growth habits.
It grows very fast in moist soils, reaching around 8 metres in just 10 years. It prefers cool but mild climates with rainy winters, and the ideal spot is bright to sunny.
Easy care and propagation:
Growing Monterey cypress from seed is simple and quick, giving strong, hardy seedlings. If you'd like to control its growth, growing it in a pot or even training it as a bonsai for a few years are excellent options.
Bring grandeur to your space:
If you're looking for a strong, beautiful tree for your garden or park, the Monterey cypress is an ideal choice. Its imposing look, hardiness and great variety make it a timeless feature that will give you shade and beauty for many years.
