Acer palmatum Red, also known as the red Japanese maple, is one of the most striking plants in the world, prized above all for the remarkable colours of its leaves.
It is known for its rich foliage, which has a purple tint in spring and turns an intense, glowing red-crimson in summer. In autumn the leaves take on stunning shades of red, orange and yellow, creating a magical sight.
It is a deciduous tree with an upright habit and slow to moderate growth, usually reaching 4-6 metres in height and 3-4 metres across when mature – but it can also be shaped as a shrub and, of course, as a bonsai.
