The Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora, syn. P. pentaphylla) is a very popular plant, known as the five-needle pine or Goyomatsu, a conifer native to Japan and Korea. It is one of the most popular trees for bonsai!
The Japanese white pine is a slow-growing tree that can reach 9-18 metres tall. It has a dense, spreading habit with branches that often twist. Its needles grow in bundles of five and are 5-8 cm long, a deep blue-green colour with a slight twist.
This pine produces small flowers in spring, followed by small brown cones that ripen in autumn. The cones are about 5 cm long and contain winged seeds.
The Japanese white pine is fairly easy to care for. It loves the sun and well-draining soil, and is a very hardy plant in a range of conditions, including drought and wind.
