Variety: Meraviglia d'Inverno / Lactuca sativa
Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a fast-growing annual herb of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It has been grown since Roman times and originates from western Asia.
It has a taproot up to half a metre long. Its leaves grow from a short stem and are light or dark green. Lettuces can be smooth-leaved, round or curly.
Lettuce flowers gradually, and its seeds form 10-15 days after flowering. Lettuce is propagated from seed, sown in seedbeds or directly in the ground; after about 15 days the seedlings are ready to transplant.
Lettuce is eaten raw, on its own or in salads, and also cooked with meat (as in the Greek fricassee).
China is the world's largest lettuce producer, followed by the USA, India and Spain. In Greece, around 1,900 hectares are grown, producing about 25,000 tonnes a year.
The most common type of lettuce is the loose-leaf type.
In the loose-leaf type, the leaves form a rosette without a head. They grow by the dozen and regrow when the first leaves are cut. They can be curly or oak-leaf shaped, and green, light green or red.
This type includes Neapolitan salad lettuces, romaine-type lettuces and common lettuces.
For best results, combine with one of our fertilisers (use once a month after the first month from planting).
Lettuce germination and growing instructions are included.
