Planting Late Summer Vegetables: A Guide for June

Although June is a summer month, it is ideal for a late planting of summer vegetables. As temperatures rise sharply, planting later in the summer becomes increasingly difficult.

So which vegetables do well when planted late, in June?

  • Tomatoes: Choose fast-maturing varieties so you can enjoy the fruit before autumn arrives.
  • Peppers: Peppers of all kinds, sweet and hot, adapt easily to late planting.
  • Aubergines: Aubergines, a particularly nutritious vegetable, can be planted until the end of June.
  • Cucumbers: Refreshing and tasty, cucumbers are an essential addition to salads and starters.
  • Courgettes: Plant several courgette varieties for a generous harvest.
  • Sweetcorn: Sweetcorn, rich in vitamins and fibre, matures quickly.
  • Melons: Refreshing and full of flavour, melons are a summer favourite.
  • Watermelons: Watermelons, rich in water and nutrients, keep you cool and hydrated.
  • Beans: Beans, in their many varieties, are a great source of protein and fibre.
  • Okra: Okra, with its distinctive flavour, is nutritious, rich in vitamins and can be planted until the end of June.

Do not forget sweet potatoes, which are planted in early summer and take about 4–5 months to mature. Quite different from ordinary potatoes, sweet potatoes are highly nutritious with a distinctive flavour.

With the right growing techniques – such as giving plants some shade, regular watering and feeding – you can enjoy a generous crop of late summer vegetables and fresh, tasty produce from your garden right through to late autumn.
