Carmona Bonsai (FUKIEN TEA)
This species is found mainly in Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Australia, but its common name comes from Fukien (Fujian) in China. In China, Fukien tea bonsai trees are very popular as indoor bonsai.
It has small, glossy, dark green rounded leaves with tiny white dots on top and fine hairs underneath. It can flower all year round, producing small white flowers followed by tiny green, red or black berries.
How do I care for a Carmona bonsai?

Carmona is traditionally an indoor plant, but it can also be kept outdoors in very warm climates. It needs plenty of natural light, so ideally place it next to a window where it gets as much light as possible. It thrives at around 20°C, so don't let the temperature drop much lower. If the climate allows, you can put your Carmona outside in the summer months, as long as the nights are warm enough.
In the winter months you can use a grow light. To raise the humidity, fill a large tray with wet gravel or expanded clay pebbles and place it under the pot. If you open the windows in winter, make sure your tree is not exposed to cold or freezing air.

How do I water my tree?
Keep the soil moist, but take care not to overdo it, as waterlogged soil can also harm the tree. Water generously as soon as the surface of the soil dries out, but never leave it standing in water.
Does it need fertiliser?
A solid organic fertiliser works well for the Fukien tea bonsai because of its sensitive roots. Liquid fertilisers can also be used in carefully measured doses, and only on moist soil. Feed the tree well from spring to autumn, following the instructions for use, and less often in winter.
How often does it need pruning?
You can prune it regularly – frequent trimming encourages a dense branch structure. Young shoots are soft and flexible, so they are easy to cut or wire. Mature branches are hard and brittle, so use proper bonsai tools and be gentle when wiring and bending them.
When is the best time to repot?
Mainly in spring, but because of its sensitive roots, repot with care. Use a soil mix that drains well yet holds moisture, as the Fukien tea tree is sensitive to both drought and excess moisture. Use a special bonsai soil rich in sand and peat, as well as lava!
How do I protect it from pests and diseases?
Carmona bonsai can attract spider mites and whiteflies. Use eco-friendly insect traps or spray with a suitable insecticide. For long-term success, it is important to give it plenty of natural light and the right amount of humidity. Watering with hard water can cause chlorosis (yellowing) in the leaves – treat it with an iron fertiliser.
